This award is presented to an APEGA member or permit holder that has implemented innovative engineering or geoscience technology that has improved the lives of Albertans.
Apostolos Kantzas, PhD, P.Eng.
Transforming Medical Imaging into Energy Innovation
Dr. Apostolos Kantzas is a pioneering professional engineer whose decades of technical innovation have profoundly improved how underground resources are developed and managed, benefitting Albertans and advancing engineering practices worldwide.
A professor in the department of chemical and petroleum engineering at the University of Calgary, Dr. Kantzas has been internationally recognized for adapting advanced medical imaging techniques for use in engineering applications. By using computed tomography scanning—typically used by doctors to see inside the human body—and applying it to subsurface engineering, he is changing how engineers understand fluid movement through underground rock formations.
In 1986, Dr. Kantzas established the first engineering laboratory in Canada that could produce non-invasive, high-resolution imaging of rock samples. This breakthrough revolutionized how engineers evaluate porosity and fluid movement in rock, significantly improving reservoir modelling and decision making while reducing uncertainty and waste in resource development. In 1994, he built the same type of laboratory at the University of Calgary.
Dr. Kantzas also developed the use of nuclear magnetic resonance—the technology that enables doctors to see inside the brain and other organs—to provide continuous, real-time measurement of water content in oil. This innovation replaces traditional sampling methods that are slow, error-prone, and environmentally inefficient, enabling more precise operational control and supporting sustainability across Alberta’s energy industry.
“My research work was always characterized as pragmatic, which I take as a compliment since it means it is actually used in the industry,” says Dr. Kantzas.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Kantzas has translated academic innovation into commercial success. His innovations have supported Alberta’s transition towards more responsible and sustainable energy development, and his work stands as a defining example of how engineering excellence can improve lives and shape a stronger future for Alberta.
