Frequently Asked Questions

I'm interested in mentoring, but do not know where to begin. How do I start?

Once you are signed up, there is a resources section. Take note of the three mentoring resources:

  1. "A Quick Guide For University Students" - what questions you might consider asking your mentor
  2. "SMART Goals Template - Fillable PDF (Revised Action Plan Template)" - how to write SMART goals
  3. "Planning the First Meeting" - a quick guide with questions on how to structure your first meeting with your mentor

How do I begin my mentoring with APEGA?

Once you have been matched with a mentor, it is expected that you make the first point of contact using the contact details provided to you via the software. Should you require more assistance with where to begin, look at resources available to you under the "My Resources" tab in the software online.

Are graduate students eligible to participate?

At this time, we are limiting the intake to undergraduate students at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary.

How do I get matched to an APEGA member?

We utilize a software matching program that can customize your search for mentors. You will search, make a request, and wait to hear back from your requested mentor. Typically this takes about 1-2 weeks to hear back from a mentor.

How long should I expect to be in a partnership?

Matches do not exceed one year from when they begin. Should you be looking to have a shorter term, please discuss this with your mentor as early as you are aware. During the summer months, you may choose to either continue your mentoring partnership or end it and search for a new one in the fall semester when you return to school.

Why do I need to provide my Verification of Enrolment?

Providing your Verification of Enrolment for your current semester lets us know that you are indeed enrolled at the university. You will need to supply a copy of this document each semester you participate in APEGA's Mentoring Program.

What are the expectations of students participating?

It is expected that students conduct themselves appropriately while in the program. Remember that you are ambassadors of your university and faculty when you meet with APEGA professionals. Please contact the Mentoring Coordinator with any concerns or questions you may have at any point during your participation in the program. Participation in this program is at the sole discretion of the Mentoring Coordinator.
