Good Standing Requirements for Members

Self-regulation relies on the commitment of members to maintain good standing with APEGA. When you consider the important work of our engineers and geoscientists, you can understand why we need to hold ourselves to the highest standards and why the public deserves the reassurance that individuals and companies undertaking this work are in good standing with their regulator.

Online Annual Declaration

Council approved the Annual Declaration Policy that came into effect July 2021. All licensed professionals are required to submit an annual declaration prior to paying their annual membership dues. This process confirms the obligations of licensed professionals under the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act and improves the effectiveness of APEGA’s regulatory processes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Good Standing

  • Everyone licensed to practice in Alberta is required to know and understand their legal and ethical obligations under the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act. In general, compliance is the state of conformity with regulatory requirements. This includes, but isn’t limited to, all provisions in the Act, the regulations, bylaws, practice standards, policies, and bulletins.

More specifically, this outlines the new requirement to complete an annual declaration during the renewal of your membership to ensure APEGA is informed of members found guilty or convicted of unskilled or unprofessional conduct that could impact the reputations of the professions and their ability to serve the public interest.

  • If you have not already confirmed your standing, please submit your request via email to [email protected] and include your name and APEGA ID number. APEGA will confirm your current standing by email. If you are not in good standing, the email will indicate the reasons and will include the steps required to return to good standing as well as contact information for additional clarification or assistance.

  • Notification that a member is not in good standing is meant to signal a cautionary period for APEGA to work with you to resolve any issues as efficiently as possible. During this cautionary period, your practice rights are not impacted, but this can affect some privileges such as your ability to become a Responsible Member, volunteer on statutory boards and committees, or endorse a Council nomination.

If you are unable to meet outlined regulatory obligations within the allotted time, there are likely to be additional consequences applied that will impact your practice rights. If this happens, APEGA will communicate the impact to your practice rights and your recourse to satisfy outstanding good-standing requirements.

  • The Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act outlines APEGA’s obligation to permit any person to inspect a list of all the professional members, licensees, permit holders, and certificate holders in good standing. In addition to the information contained in APEGA’s Member and Permit Holder Directory, APEGA will provide your overall good-standing status and the reason to anyone who inquires (e.g., an individual is not in good standing for failure to meet the requirements of the CPD Program). This means that anyone can submit a request to verify that a member or permit holder is in good standing.

All good standing requests must be received by email.
