English Language Competency Requirements for Licensees & Professional Members

Proving English Language Competency (ELC) is required for those applying to become a Professional Member, Licensee or Professional Licensee. If an applicant has not completed an undergraduate degree where the content of the program was taught in English, applicants must be able to demonstrate their competency in English in writing, oral, reading, and comprehension.

During the initial submission, applicants do not need to provide any documentation to complete the ELC requirement. For those applying to become a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), the ELC requirement is built into the Competency Based Assessment Tool (CBAT)

For those applying to become a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.), the ELC requirement is built into the Reference Questionnaire that is completed by the references.

The APEGA Board of Examiners will review the work experience and/or competencies and the reference for the demonstration of meeting the ELC requirement.

The APEGA Board of Examiners may request additional information to prove an applicants acceptable ELC if it is determined that the applicant has not satisfied this requirement. This will be communicated by APEGA staff and may include a requirement to pass the TOEFL Exam.
