Academic Requirements for Engineers & Geoscientists

Applicants are required to provide their academics to be assessed for academic qualification. There are different academic requirements for Professional Engineers and Professional Geoscientists.

Basic guidelines regarding acceptability of certain academic programs can be found:

All applicants will be evaluated against the APEGA syllabus in engineering or geoscience. Applicants who do not meet the academic requirements could be prescribed exams to make up for identified academic deficiencies, asked to write confirmatory exams to confirm the quality, depth, and breadth of their education, or refused. If there is a significant academic deficiency the submitted work experience may not be reviewed.

All applicants are required to provide their:

  • Conferred undergraduate degree

If applicable, applicants also need to provide:

  • Postgraduate Degrees (if applicable)
  • Transfer Credits (if applicable)
  • Any university entrance exams or A-level exams

If your education was gained outside of Canada, go to the World Education Services section below.

Applicants with an undergraduate degree not in engineering or geoscience may be required to provide a current detailed resume.

Engineers-in-Training

Applicants that are currently Active Engineers-in-Training (E.I.T.) with APEGA do not need to provide their academics again unless they are claiming Post-Graduate Work Experience Record and their transcripts were not previously submitted.

If an applicant's E.I.T. status has expired or the applicant is not in good standing prior to having started their application for Licensee or Professional Membership, they will be required to submit their academic documentation again for assessment based on the education they have.

Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board

For degree programs accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), APEGA will accept an official transcript from the degree granting institution. The degree that is provided must be conferred.

For a Licensee or Professional Membership application, if an applicant is claiming Post-Graduate Work Experience Credit, they will need to have their Post-Graduate transcripts sent to APEGA.

The CEAB program is only available for undergraduate degrees.

Non-CEAB & International Programs

If an applicant completed a degree in an engineering program that was not part of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), they will need to have the following transcripts sent to APEGA from the degree granting institution:

How to deliver transcripts to APEGA

Important: APEGA does not accept transcripts received directly by applicants. If you upload a copy yourself, send it via email, or send a hard copy yourself, it will not be accepted.

To complete your application, your transcripts must be sent directly to APEGA as per the table below.

Canadian earned transcripts (CEAB and NON-CEAB) International transcripts
1.       APEGA will accept electronic copies of transcripts from only Canadian institutions for an application. This would be the quickest method to have them received.
You may ask the institution’s Registrar’s Office to email your transcripts directly to us, or you may follow the instructions provided by your institution, which will allow you to “share a digital copy of your transcripts” by doing the following:
  • Please select the option which says “generate a link to my documents
  • Name of Organization: APEGA
  • Recipient: [email protected]
You do not need to include an expiry date. If you include an access pin number then please email [email protected] to provide the pin number in order for APEGA to download your transcript once it’s received. Please note: Do not download the transcripts and attach them to an email and then send that email to APEGA. Additionally, please do not include a link to your transcripts in a personal email and then send that email to APEGA. They will not be accepted.

2.       If the electronic transcript option is not available, APEGA requires official sealed and/or stamped physical copies, which must be sent to APEGA’s Edmonton Location directly from your university. Documents may also be accepted directly from the applicant if they are still sealed by the university and have not been opened. Your transcripts must contain a graduation date. Documents should be sent to Attention: Registration
If your post-secondary education was gained outside of Canada you must obtain an academic evaluation of your academic records from World Education Services (WES) Canada in the form of an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) Course-by-Course report.

APEGA will not accept any other proof of academics, and this report must be delivered directly from WES to APEGA electronically. WES must send the completed evaluation report directly to APEGA digitally. Physical copies and copies from an Applicant will not be accepted.

Please request your WES report to be translated in English.

AP Courses:
If you have received credits towards your degree from AP courses, please have the transcript sent to APEGA directly from your high school/college as WES does not evaluate them.

World Education Services (WES) For International Applicants

All applicants with international education are required to provide World Education Services (WES) ICAP Course by Course Report. WES is an international credential evaluation service designed by Immigration and Citizenship Canada to provide educational credential evaluations for education completed outside of Canada. WES is the only international credential evaluation service recognized by APEGA, and only the International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) Course by Course Report is accepted.

All transcripts must be included as part of the WES ICAP Course by Course Report, including transfer courses. APEGA does not accept industry training (i.e., journeyman) certificates, professional development, or continuing education.

A WES evaluation that states you have a "4-year degree undergraduate degree" is only the first step in the academic qualification process. APEGA's Board of Examiners must also conduct a full review of your academic credentials.

WES ICAP Course by Course Report vs. APEGA's Board of Examiners

WES ICAP Course by Course Report

  • Verifies the authenticity of the applicant's academic documents
  • Completes any translations required of your academics
  • Establishes the equivalent level of your academic credentials with the Canadian university system.

APEGA's Board of Examiners

  • Reviews the applicant's education to ensure it is in engineering or geoscience
  • Confirms the acceptability of the course content of the applicant education
  • Ensures that the applicant's education meets the legal requirements for licensure

How to Obtain a World Education Services Report

To obtain a WES ICAP Course by Course Report:

  1. Start an application through myAPEGA and receive an APEGA ID number. This APEGA ID number will be required to order a WES ICAP Course by Course Report.
  2. In the Online Application System, when completing the 12 steps of the application, after the education has been added in Step 5, follow the instructions to continue to the WES website for the next step of the application process.
  3. Follow the instructions provided by WES. If an applicant already has an evaluation report from WES, they may need to update that report to an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) Course by Course Report.
  4. WES will send the completed evaluation report to APEGA electronically. Physical copies will not be accepted.

Applicants are required to monitor the status of their report though the WES Portal and notify APEGA at [email protected] of any delays in receiving the report. Applicants have ninety (90) days from the date they submit and pay for their application to provide all of their academic documents to APEGA.

Please note that if WES cannot submit a completed report within the 90 days of your application submission, your application will be withdrawn. Please consider only submitting your application once your WES Report is complete.

The final review of academic documents is completed by APEGA's Board of Examiners. The Board of Examiners ultimately determines an applicants' depth, breadth, and acceptability of academics.
