Exams | APEGA


You may need to write exams to start your career after graduation or to continue your career in Alberta or the United States. In addition, after assessing your application, the Board of Examiners may require you to write exams. 

If you register for an exam for which you are ineligible or do not need to write, APEGA will cancel your request and let you know that you do not need to write it.

  • times and locations for writing exams
  • rescheduling and cancelling options
  • exam and study materials

You can also register with APEGA for the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam and the Structural Engineering exam.

After an exam registration deadline has passed, APEGA does not give refunds. You may request to reschedule an exam. These requests are considered on a case-by-case basis. Not all requests are approved. Each exam page describes the rescheduling and cancelling options.

Application Withdrawals & Reactivations

APEGA has recently updated its policy regarding application withdrawals and reactivations. The Board of Examiners (BOE) gives applicants 2 years to attempt prescribed exams or courses. If the exams or courses are not attempted within 2 years, the application is withdrawn for inactivity.

Previously, APEGA allowed applications to be reactivated within 7 years of being withdrawn. Due to evolving academic and experience requirements, reactivated applications place an additional burden on the BOE and staff who are entrusted to assure a fair and consistent approach to decision making.  To preserve the BOE’s commitment to fairness, reactivation of withdrawn applications will no longer be permitted. Withdrawn applicants will be required to submit a new application for Membership and will be subject to policies and procedures in place at that time.

Withdrawn Applications


If you voluntarily withdraw your application from active consideration, you will need to submit a new application for Membership if you wish to be considered again in the future. New applications are subject to the policies and procedures in place when you re-apply.  

Due to Inactivity

If it takes more than 2 years for you to complete your BOE-prescribed exams or courses, your application will be withdrawn due to inactivity. Once your file is withdrawn from active consideration, you will be required to submit a new application for Membership. Your new application will be subject to the policies and procedures in place at that time.

Withdrawal Guidelines:

  • Membership/exam fees are non-refundable
  • You will be sent 1 reminder notice prior to withdrawal
  • Activity is defined as, but not limited to:
    • Any attempts to write prescribed examinations
    • Notification of completed courses or examinations
    • Update of work experience as required by the BOE or upon completion of prescribed exams
