Mathematical optimization is a powerful tool that can significantly improve engineering practice. Recent scientific literature is filled with publications that promote new heuristic solvers that mimic biological processes, among which genetic algorithms are probably the best known. However, in most instances, the power of linear programming still shines compared to heuristic solution strategies, both in terms of its speed, accuracy and the availability of proven solver libraries.

This presentation covers an interesting application of linear programming to optimize the operation of dams for multi-purpose water use and shows how sophisticated methods of converting non-linear functions into their linear equivalents can deliver quick and globally optimal solutions to problems of immense size and complexity. While examples of successful applications are presented for water networks, similar concepts can be useful in other network flow applications such as the optimal line pack management in gas pipelines.

Brought to you by the Calgary Branch. Everyone is welcome to attend.

About the Presenter

Dr. Nesa Ilich, P.Eng., is a professional engineer from Alberta with more than 30 years of professional practice in water resource engineering, hydrology, and river basin planning and management. Dr. Ilich holds civil (water resources) engineering degrees, an M.Sc. from the University of Alberta, and a PhD from the University of Manitoba. He has worked on challenging water resources development projects for various government and private clients, and he also actively collaborates in research projects with leading universities in Canada. His expertise includes computer model development and application that involve optimization and stochastic simulation to address multi-reservoir operation in complex water resources systems. He was the principal developer of the WRMM and WRM-DSS models for the Government of Alberta for 20 years, and he has published more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He is a recipient of four awards for academic excellence and one award for excellence in professional practice, and he also serves as associate editor with one of the most influential journals in the water resources sector. Over the past six years, Dr. Ilich has been engaged as an advisor to the Government of India on a World Bank funded national hydrology project. Dr. Ilich is the principal of Optimal Solutions Ltd., a consulting firm from Calgary (www.optimal-solutions-ltd.com).
