Thinking Outside The Box; Creative Thinking Skills
8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Thinking differently and being truly creative is difficult in today’s fast-paced, risk-intolerant and capital-constrained environment. We often hear leaders ask their staff to "think outside the box" more. Leaders at all levels can help foster learning and innovation. This workshop will provide you with the practical tools to "see" problems as opportunities and let go of the old ways of dealing with them by using new thinking tools.

Thinking differently and being truly creative is difficult in today’s fast-paced, risk-intolerant, and capital-constrained environment. We often hear leaders ask their staff to "think outside the box" more. Leaders at all levels can help foster learning and innovation. This workshop will provide you with the practical tools to "see" problems as opportunities and let go of the old ways of dealing with them by using new thinking tools.
What will be covered? We start by trying to understand how the educational system and other life factors can shape our thinking patterns and lead to incremental or familiar change that is not innovative. You will uncover your unique blend of preferences and strengths in the four stages of the creative process. Mapping these preferences (creative profiles) can help teams learn to respect and synchronize different thinking and problem solving orientations with their fellow teammates. You will learn to use a three-stage process to find the right question/problem, see the current reality more clearly, and conceptualize ideas that will delight your customers. Most importantly, you will learn to think differently and have fun doing it.
At the conclusion of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Articulate why it is so difficult to “think outside the box” when coaching and developing others to be more creative
- See your own blend of creative strengths in association with others, thereby increasing mutual understanding and collaboration while decreasing conflict from diverse points of view and working styles
- Develop innovative ideas that create value and differentiation
- Respectfully challenge conventional business practices
- Flex your problem solving style for the associated stage in the innovation process
- Understand what fosters and impedes innovation and risk taking in organizations

Leading Major Capital Projects
8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Large engineering and construction projects are complex and of longer duration, presenting greater challenges to busy managers and executives. The long history of staggering cost overruns and delays in project completion offers little assurance that the cost estimates and schedules presented to project executives can be relied upon. The level of uncertainty and volatility associated with major capital projects make a predictable outcome almost impossible to achieve.

To help busy leaders, this course proposes the application of a Benevolent Dictatorship on the next wave of major capital projects. Benevolent Dictatorship is a practice in which a demanding leader exercises absolute leadership over an organization and its major capital projects, but does so for the benefit of all members of the organization and the projects in full compliance with legal, moral, and ethical requirements and values.
Project leaders must act ethically and legally, understand risks, and address the concerns of their stakeholders while overseeing and participating in the delivery of their major capital project.
This course will cover the following subjects:
- Embrace Uncertainty: classify risks, allocate reserve amounts and assign responsibility for risks.
- Engage Stakeholders: each consultation and negotiation with a stakeholder can affect how well you deliver your project.
- Transform Governance: establish a governance structure and advocate ethical behaviour.
- Fulfill Your Obligations: appreciate your contractual and tort obligations, recognize your claims and disputes obligations, and pursue HSE obligations.
- Build Relationships: earn trust, gain respect and adopt a collaborative relationship model.
- Improve Productivity: prepare productivity plan, address productivity issues, incorporate productivity lessons learned, set project-based productivity targets, measure productivity, provide feedback.
When you participate in this session, you will learn how to:
- Improve major capital project performance
- Conduct oversight of major capital projects
- Understand and fulfill senior executives’ obligations

The level of uncertainty and volatility associated with major capital projects make a predictable outcome almost impossible to achieve.

Calgary Branch Luncheon: Near Surface Geophysics in Search of Failing Dams, Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Hidden Stashes of Pablo Escobar
11:15 am - 1:00 pm
Paul Bauman, P.Eng., P.Geoph. will present a brief discussion of some of the challenges in applying near surface geophysical methods to provide humanitarian relief as well as address archaeological, geotechnical, and even criminal issues.
Register by April 14, 2019
Since 1990, Paul Bauman has carried out and directed near surface geophysical exploration programs on 6 continents. Notable archaeological investigations have included exploring for Dead Sea Scroll Caves, the mythological ancient city of Atlantis, gas chambers of the Sobibor Nazi extermination camp, a Holocaust escape tunnel in Lithuania dug by the "Burning Brigade," World War II mass burials, a first century bath house in Nazareth, and the tomb of Jesus in Jerusalem on the property of Joseph of Arimathea.
Recent locations of water resource exploration programs for humanitarian relief have included the Rohingya camps in Bangladesh, the massive Kakuma refugee camp in the Turkana desert of Kenya, and the villages of Northern Uganda destroyed by Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army. Some of the more significant geophysical targets in Western Canada have included mapping geohazards in glaciomarine clays and waste rock dumps, imaging the interior of earth filled dams, the direct detection and mapping of oil sand and shallow gas deposits, and the mapping of natural saline discharge zones along the entire reach of the Athabasca River through the oil sands deposits.
A number of these programs have been featured in television and movie documentaries, books, a Discovery Channel "reality" television series about hunting for the hidden cash, arms, emeralds, and drugs of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel, and even an off-Broadway play opening this March.
In this talk, Paul will briefly discuss the background, technical challenges, and outcomes of a few of these investigations. Besides describing the intriguing geoscience scenarios of each of the site investigations, Paul will clearly describe why the findings are important and of inherent interest to the wider audiences of PBS NOVA, the New York Times, Time magazine, National Geographic, and APEGA.
About the Presenter
Paul Bauman, P.Eng., P.Geoph., is the founder and technical director of the geophysics group at Advisian (a division of WorleyParsons Canada Services Ltd). Paul earned a BScE in Geological Engineering and a minor in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University, and a M.Sc. in Earth Sciences from the University of Waterloo. Over the past 30 years, Paul and the geophysics group at WorleyParsons have pioneered many applications in near-surface geophysics, including in the areas of water exploration, salt water intrusion mapping, contaminant mapping, the direct detection of hydrocarbons, archaeology, geotechnical engineering applications, and the measurement of fundamental hydrogeological properties.
Paul has appeared in a number of documentaries and television series, including the National Geographic television special Finding Atlantis, two NOVA documentaries (Ancient Refuge in the Holy Land and Holocaust Escape Tunnel), the documentary Deadly Deception at Sobibor, the six episode Discovery series Finding Escobar’s Millions, the recently released The Good Nazi, and Finding Water, a documentary about a water exploration program in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. Paul was the recipient of the 2016 APEGA Community Service Summit Award.
