Revised Practice Guideline in Effect | Licensed Professional as an Expert Witness

APEGA’s revised practice guideline Licensed Professional as an Expert Witness is in effect as of February 1, 2026. When a licensed professional is called upon to act as an expert witness in legal and quasi-judicial settings, they play a vital role by providing specialized knowledge beyond the court’s expertise. This guideline outlines key considerations for those licensed professionals and provides professional practice advice and best practice recommendations.

First published in 2003 as Professional Member as a Witness, substantial revisions have been made to streamline information and update references to other relevant APEGA publications. The updated version reflects more broadly applicable situations, offering general information that any licensed professional may find helpful when called upon to act as an expert witness.

From December 2, 2024, to February 14, 2025, registrants and the public were given the opportunity to review the draft and share their insights. Thank you to those who participated in this important part of self-regulation.

We encourage all registrants to review the updated guideline.
