Webinar | Introduction to Tunnelling
Tunnels are a key to the success of many different types of infrastructure projects—from roads and railways, to water, wastewater, and other utilities, all sectors touch underground infrastructure. This introductory presentation will explore the fundamentals of tunnelling, including the various methods of excavation and construction, such as cut-and-cover, mined tunnelling, bored tunnelling, and immersed tube tunnelling. We will discuss geological considerations, the importance of site investigation, and risk management.
Additionally, the presentation will highlight key challenges faced during tunnelling projects, such as managing groundwater, limiting impacts to surrounding infrastructure, and mitigating environmental impacts. By understanding these aspects, attendees will gain a comprehensive overview of tunnelling processes and their significance in modern engineering.

About the presenter
Dani Delaloye is the North American tunnel practice lead, and a principal engineer and project manager with Mott MacDonald, where she manages and leads the delivery for projects from small trenchless jobs to large-scale multidisciplinary transit projects. Her technical expertise ranges from planning and leading fieldwork assignments, through technical design and coordination, to site condition surveys and inspections. She has worked on a broad range of tunnelling, underground, and trenchless projects from pre-feasibility to detailed design phases, through to construction oversight. She completed her Geological Engineering Master’s Degree with a specialization in geotechnical and geomechanical engineering and a focus on underground construction. She has worked across sectors, including transportation, mining, water and wastewater, and energy projects. Prior to joining industry, Dani gained an abundance of on-site experience at various tunnelling and mining projects in Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Austria, Canada, and the United States.
