In-Person | Risk Management: Utilizing Lessons Learned from Contract and Negligence Cases

This session provides a comprehensive review and discussion of legal cases from contract and negligence dispute cases and the findings of a recent major capital project. This seminar is relevant to APEGA members who are engaged in the delivery of engineering and construction projects in complex and unpredictable environments. This course will provide attendees with an opportunity to reflect on and learn from lessons learned—hopefully not to be repeated!

The session will also focus on the roles and responsibilities of the owners, contractors, and engineers. It will provide participants with a good understanding of the practical implications of the legal cases and improve their abilities to navigate project risks and make better decisions. 

The course covers cases relating to: 

  • Contractual disputes
  • Negligence disputes
  • The findings of Muskrat Falls Mega Project
  • Mediation case on a major capital project

About the speaker

Dr. George Jergeas is a Civil Engineer with an M.Sc. and PhD in Construction Management from Loughborough University, UK, with over 45 years of industry and academic experience. He served as a professor of project management at the University of Calgary from 1994–2021. George has a strong passion in increasing the efficiency and competency of teams delivering major engineering and construction projects. His expertise includes project governance, assurance and readiness, risk management, project execution planning, contract strategies, partnering and collaborative relationships, claims and disputes with focus on dispute resolution, and project management training and coaching. George’s partnering methodology has been successfully implemented on over 180 projects across North America.
