Architectural Engineering Rooted in Indigenous Knowledge: UNCEDED—Voices of the Land
Register by 5 p.m. on June 18, 2025
After experiencing the UNCEDED: Voices of the Land exhibit, participants are invited to hear Gary Bosgoed present on the integration of cultural understanding with professional responsibility, followed by a question-and-answer period.
The exhibit
The Canada Council for the Arts selected internationally renowned architect Douglas Cardinal and a team of Indigenous architects to represent Canada at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. Cardinal, the driving force behind this historical initiative, is best known for his designs of the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. UNCEDED: Voices of the Land is an unprecedented exhibition—the first Canadian entry to the Venice Architecture Biennale to be presented in its full integrity on North American soil at the Canadian Museum of History in 2019, and now in Edmonton, opening in March of 2025.
This exhibition features 18 Indigenous architects from Turtle Island. Together with Cardinal, they showcase their innovative design talent through a breathtaking audiovisual installation.
Session learning objectives
- Participants will learn how Indigenous knowledge systems and relationships to land, water, and natural resources inform and enhance engineering and geoscientific approaches.
- Participants will understand Indigenous perspectives in design.
This session is made possible by the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Immigration and Multiculturalism through the Ethnocultural Grant Program.
