APEGA Preparing for Transition to New Legislation in 2027
APEGA continues to prepare for the anticipated proclamation of the Professional Governance Act (PGA) in June 2026, with staggered implementation for professional regulatory organizations—including APEGA—stretching into early 2027.
On May 15, 2025, the Government of Alberta received royal assent for the PGA, which will replace the existing acts of 20 regulatory bodies in Alberta, including the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act.
Over the past few months, APEGA has been updating its information technology systems to meet the PGA requirements, such as process and terminology changes. These same terminology updates will also be applied to APEGA’s practice standards, bulletins, and guidelines, so that we are prepared to transition to the PGA without any interruption. We continue to work closely with the government on the details of our regulation, and we are drafting the required updates to our bylaws.
Starting later in 2026, APEGA registrants will be given an opportunity to review and comment on the draft bylaws, code of ethics and conduct, and practice standards and guidelines before they are approved by APEGA Council.
APEGA will transition to the PGA in early 2027. More information about feedback and review timeframes will be shared when available.
