Webinar | AI in Engineering for Infrastructure and Risk Management
This session explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping how we plan, monitor, and manage infrastructure in civil and geological engineering. Through real-world examples from Canada and other regions, we will look at how AI is being used to monitor slope stability, enhance dam safety, support predictive maintenance, and optimize pavement systems. These tools help us make faster decisions, stretch limited resources, and strengthen public safety, especially in complex and high-risk environments.
But the real conversation is not just about what AI can do. It is about how we use it, when we choose not to use it, and what that means for the future of our profession. Together, we will explore three critical questions:
- What can you do, as engineers and geoscientists, when using or choosing not to use AI?
- What should you be asking before trusting or applying any AI-generated insights?
- How will this shift change what it means to be a professional in the years ahead?
We will explore the risks of relying on incomplete data, the limits of automation, and the ethical challenges that arise when AI is applied to decisions that affect people, land, and communities. This session offers both technical insight and space for professional reflection. It invites you to think about the values you bring into your work and how to stay grounded as technology evolves.

About the presenter
Palash Sanyal, ICD.D, PMP, is a certified professional facilitator (CPF) and sustainability educator with an engineering background and cross-sectoral expertise in governance, finance, and leadership. He teaches project management, sustainability, and systems thinking at SAIT and the University of Saskatchewan, and serves on several boards spanning insurance, housing, infrastructure, and international development. As the founder of Governing Water Inc., Palash supports engineering professionals in navigating AI adoption, risk governance, and digital strategy.
With hands-on experience in civil and environmental engineering, he has led multidisciplinary teams in water security, geotechnical projects, and held policy advisory roles across Canada and globally. He also brings a strong understanding of financial systems, having served on audit and finance committees and completed training in capital planning, risk, and sustainability reporting. Palash has presented at global platforms including World Water Week, the American Geophysical Union, and the International Association for Impact Assessment. His current work bridges the technical and human dimensions of systems, helping professionals integrate AI, ethics, and equity into infrastructure, mentorship, and organizational leadership.
