This session covers the foundational knowledge areas necessary for professional practice in erosion and sediment control, including regulatory requirements, site planning and management, runoff analysis, and soil stabilization techniques commonly used in the field. It provides a base for individuals pursuing the Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC®) designation.

Session topics:

  • federal, provincial and local regulations
  • erosion and sediment site planning and management, including resource planning, hazards associated with urban development, land development plans, scheduling and implementation
  • runoff management planning and the associated equations and considerations to address, including soil permeability, precipitation and the hydrologic cycle
  • soil stabilization mechanisms (erosion control), including vegetation, bio-technical protection, soil tackifiers and stabilizers, turf reinforcement mats, hydraulically applied erosion control products, erosion control blankets and other related technologies

About the presenter

James Kay is a professional engineer and consulting civil engineer with Alpine Civil Engineering Consultants, overseeing municipal works and land development projects, including subdivisions, townhouses, commercial plazas, industrial, and institutional projects throughout the Okanagan and Greater BC in excess of $50 million per year. Over the last two decades, James has been heavily involved in the erosion and sediment control industry, obtaining his CPESC designation, volunteering on boards, and presenting and teaching at various conferences and association venues. Stormwater can have an enormous impact on our natural environment, and raising the bar by implementing basic measures can make an enormous difference.
