Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

A message from APEGA's Registrar & CEO.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from APEGAWith 2018 fast approaching, it's a good time to reflect on highlights of the past year and look ahead to the new one.

It's been eight months since I joined APEGA as your Registrar & CEO, and the time has gone by very quickly, bringing with it both challenges and successes.

When I started, my focus was to better understand APEGA, its people, its relationships, and its rich history. It's been a steep learning curve. Though I've spent my entire professional career as a Professional Engineer in Alberta, I didn't realize the many responsibilities APEGA manages across its regulatory and non-regulatory areas.

My knowledge is still growing, but I'm making great progress! So, too, is APEGA.

Looking Back

My first few months were spent assembling an executive team to lead APEGA forward. Two new roles were filled by capable and veteran APEGA leaders. Matthew Oliver, CD, P.Eng., M.Eng., moved into the Chief Regulatory Officer position, and Heidi Yang, P.Eng., FEC, FGC (Hon.), became our Chief Operating Officer. Sharilee Fossum, MBA, CPA, CMA, ICD.D, joined us in the role of Chief Financial & Administration Officer.

We've made several important changes over the past year that have improved our organization's financial and information technology systems to ensure they are modern and secure. We continue to implement a new quality management system to ensure continual improvement across the entire organization.

Various regulatory initiatives have also been undertaken that enable us to be a more effective regulator and increase public confidence in our professions. For example, an enhanced auditing system was launched to ensure Members are complying with our Continuing Professional Development program to maintain their skills and competencies. We're strengthening relationships with Permit Holders and Responsible Members to help them improve and enhance how they manage the professional practice at their companies.

Everything that we do – every change or improvement we make – is bringing us closer to a common vision of being a better and compassionate regulator.

What does that mean exactly? For me, being a compassionate regulator means that everything we do must always be done from a service perspective. Though we cannot compromise public safety, we can be more empathetic in the way we serve our stakeholders. Members and the public who deal with us may not always be satisfied with the outcome, but they need to always feel that they were listened to and treated with respect.

Being a compassionate regulator will also help us become a better regulator, which is a key priority of APEGA Council, our elected governing body. Since starting with APEGA, one of my goals has been building an open and transparent relationship with Council. I want Council to have confidence that our organization is performing well and advancing towards the direction it has charted for us in APEGA's 2017-2022 strategic plan.

Looking Ahead

In 2018, we'll continue to focus on creating business efficiencies to better serve Members. I'd also like to turn my attention to other opportunities, including increasing engagement with our Members. Professionals should feel proud to be part of APEGA. Our challenge is to help Members better understand the value of self-regulation and their professional designations.

Modernizing our governing legislation, the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act, remains a priority in the new year. Legislative review consultations with Members wrapped up in 2017, but more work remains. Discussions will continue in the new year with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta – or ASET, as it's commonly known – as we work to resolve key issues over the joint licensing of Professional Technologists.

The past year was one of transition for APEGA. I look forward to stability within the organization in 2018, building on the momentum we've created to develop an even stronger organizational culture focused on service excellence and continuous improvement.

It continues to be a privilege to serve the professions in my new role as APEGA's Registrar & CEO.

Merry Christmas, and I wish you happiness and prosperity this holiday season and in the coming year.
