Geologists Aim for Heads-Up on Volcanoes

Using an advanced imaging technique, geologists in Australia and the United States have discovered a way to identify weak points in the Earth’s crust.

They found that magnetotelluric imaging, a high-resolution mapping technique, could better depict features of volcanic activity than standard geologic models. Geologists at the University of Adelaide in Australia and the University of Illinois, who are collaborating on the research, believe the information will help us understand why past volcanoes occurred and where future ones are likely.
