Volunteer to Facilitate Community Outreach and Member Events

APEGA is committed to supporting the Professional Engineers and Professional Geoscientists of today and tomorrow. Ranging from K-12 initiatives to local Professional Member Induction Ceremonies, our events are enjoyable opportunities to reach out to other members and to the public. Work with our Outreach and Events teams to engage with a variety of audiences through APEGA's many fun events.

Science Olympics Volunteer (2016)

 

Assist with APEGA's Professional Networking and Social Networking Events

When you volunteer to assist with the many events organized by APEGA and the branches throughout the year, you get the opportunity to meet new people, grow your network among fellow members and related professionals, and to represent APEGA.

Special Events Photographer

APEGA is looking for volunteers to act as photographers for different special events (Professional Member Induction Ceremony, Member Recognition, and other events as required) in Edmonton. Volunteers will share their knack for photography and take pictures of the ceremony, recipients, and venue with an APEGA-owned DSLR camera, under the direction of the APEGA Event Coordinator.

Interested volunteers will be required to take part in an interview with portfolio, and to sign a waiver granting APEGA ownership of the photos taken while acting as a volunteer photographer.

Event date: September 13, 2018 and possibly other future events

Qualifications

  • May be any of:
    • University student
    • Member-in-Training (E.I.T. or G.I.T.)
    • Professional  Engineer
    • Professional Geoscientist
    • Professional Licensee
  • Knows how to properly operate a DSLR Camera
  • Able to take direction

Support APEGA's Child and Youth Outreach Events

When you volunteer at any of the outreach events that APEGA and the branches organize throughout the year, you help fuel a lifelong interest and passion in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields for children and teenagers.

Rock & Fossil Clinic – Edmonton

Volunteers needed: Up to 20 

The APEGA K-12 Outreach Team is looking for enthusiastic volunteers who are passionate about geoscience and willing to share their expertise with the next generation of geoscientists. Volunteers will be responsible for identifying rock, fossil, and mineral samples brought in by members of the public, and will manage a hands-on activity station. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring samples from their personal collections for display purposes.

Date: October 13, 2018, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Qualifications

  • Practising or retired Professional Geoscientist, G.I.T, university student, or geoscience applicant. Members, students, and applicants in a geological branch of engineering are also encouraged to apply
  • Pride in the professions of geoscience and engineering
  • Willingness to share your knowledge and experience with the public
  • Comfortable in discussing the basics of various aspects of geoscience with individuals and families
  • Interest in promoting geoscience and related careers.

  • Practising or retired professional member, E.I.T., G.I.T., or a university student or applicant in engineering or geoscience. Non-members are also eligible to apply.
  • Takes pride in the professions of engineering and geoscience
  • Willingness to share knowledge and experience with young people
  • Interested in promoting engineering, geoscience, technology, and related careers to students in Grades 1-12
  • Creative and open-minded individual open to collaborative work
  • Must have volunteered at an APEGA Science Olympics event in either 2017 or 2018. Extensive outreach experience will be considered in lieu of this requirement.

University Rapid Resume Review

Volunteers needed: 50-100  

Professional Engineers, Professional Geoscientists, and Human Resource representatives are invited to participate in a "speed-dating" format event where they will review and critique resumes for students. This will allow students the opportunity to gain valuable feedback to help them create a resume to start them on their professional path.

This event is designed to give students instant feedback on the content of their resumes. Professional volunteers are given just a few minutes per round to look over a student’s resume and provide insightful information to help each student create an outstanding resume.

Alberta Science Network Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom Program

Volunteer with the Alberta Science Network in our Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom program. We provide you with support and training to help you create your own interactive, science curriculum topic presentation. Our Program Coordinators manage more than 1,500 teacher requests annually from across the province.

Edmonton – Innovate Program

Edmonton Public School Board's Innovate Program is seeking Professional Engineers and Professional Geoscientists to mentor students in developing lines of inquiry and analysis for various sustainable energy solutions. These opportunities are not planned or executed by APEGA. However, due to the incredibly high educational value for these students, APEGA is supporting this initiative by facilitating volunteer recruitment. 

Volunteers will share their knowledge, serve as positive role models, and aid in research and prototype development in the following areas of exploration: 

  • Designing and Building Green Walls 
    • Used for aesthetics and air quality monitoring 
    • Used to grow food 
  •  Virgin Earth Challenge
    • Researching methane-fueled bacteria as a means to reduce greenhouse gases
  • Electromagnetic Levitation
    • Demonstrating an understanding of electrical and magnetic principles by designing a functioning electromagnetic levetation device.

University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering Cooperative Education Volunteers

Do you enjoy mentoring engineering students? Interested in sharing your knowledge in a great co-op environment? Would you like to see what's new in industry?

The University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering Cooperative Education program is seeking APEGA volunteers to assist our Co-op team with conducting on-site evaluations and report assessments for the Summer 2018 term.

What is involved?

  • Schedule your on-site evaluation meetings with an assigned group of students
  • Conduct the on-site evaluation meetings within your geographic area
  • Evaluate and submit the work term reports, forms, and grades to the University of Alberta (All assessments due by August 31, 2018)

Requirements

  • Time commitment to meet with approximately 10 students in July. Each meeting is approximately 1 hour and conducted at the work site.
  • Ability to review and evaluate reports and submit grades by August 31, 2018
  • Mandatory orientation/training session for all volunteers on Thursday, July 5, 2018, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the U of A, Faculty of Engineering.

Note: All travel expenses will be reimbursed to attend the orientation and for travel to on-site meetings.
