Volunteer for a Committee or Board

APEGA's committees and boards assist with the Association's governance and operations. They are involved in a wide range of engineering and geoscience initiatives like examinations and professional admission, the ongoing improvement of guidelines and standards, and member recognition and awards. Boards and committees play a vital role in the engineering and geoscience professions by ensuring members are held to the highest standard.

Get Involved with APEGA's Complaints and Enforcement Process

When you join one of the boards or committees involved in APEGA's complaints and enforcement process, you will help to ensure that the regulations in the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act are properly and fairly enforced.

Appeal Board Panel Member

The purpose of the Appeal Board is to provide Association members and the public full protection of their statutory right of appeal and right to natural justice, in accordance with the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act, through review of decisions and actions by the Discipline Committee, Practice Review Board, Investigative Committee or Board of Examiners.   The Appeal Board is established under section 18.1 of the EGP Act.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as a P. Eng., P. Geo., P. Geol., P. Geoph. or P.L. with APEGA for a minimum of 5 years.
  • A practising Professional Engineer, Professional Geoscientist for 10 years

Expert Witness in Geoscience

APEGA Compliance is seeking two Geoscience Expert Witnesses to act in short-term contract positions. These individuals will assist APEGA's Compliance Department with three specific Compliance cases.

Qualifications

  • Be licensed as a Professional Geoscience Member of APEGA (P.Geo., P.Geol., or P.Geoph.), who is in good standing
  • Have experience working as a geoscientist in the financial industry
  • Have experience reading financial reports and sound working knowledge of business activities
  • Have a sound understanding of the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act
  • Knowledge of the Alberta court system, injunctions, and court orders is considered an asset

Discipline Committee Members

Volunteers needed: Up to 10

The Discipline Committee adjudicates on allegations of unskilled practice and unprofessional conduct brought before it by the Investigative Committee, following complaints against APEGA Members (individuals and/or permit-holding entities).

Qualification

  • Active Professional Member licensed as a P.Eng., P.Geo., P.Geol., P.Geoph., or P.L. with APEGA.
  • Professional Members, if mid-career, can be of non-practicing status. Life Members will be considered if it has been less than five years since becoming a Life Member.
  • Minimum of ten years of industry experience.
  • Prior APEGA volunteer experience on statutory committees is considered an asset. Cannot serve on conflicting statutory boards, such as the Appeal Board or the Investigative Committee.
  • Experience in tribunal decision making, communication, listening, and decision writing are considered an asset.
  • Committee and governance experience is considered an asset.

Investigative Committee Volunteer

Volunteers needed: Up to 10 

The APEGA Investigative Committee is a statutory committee established under the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act. Its mandate is to investigate complaints against APEGA Members and Permit Holders received by the Registrar’s designate in accordance with the requirements of the Act.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as a P.Eng., P.Geo., P.Geol., P.Geoph., or P.L. with APEGA
  • Significant experience as a Professional Member, ideally with at least ten years of industry experience
  • A minimum of five years of Canadian Professional Membership, preferably with APEGA
  • Applicants from all disciplines of engineering or geoscience are encouraged to apply
  • Candidates with experience in residential and commercial construction, geotechnical engineering and environmental practice are always needed

Professional Engineers are needed to assess and evaluate APEGA Professional Practice Standards, Guidelines, and Bulletins related to the professional practice of Engineering to ensure that they are adequate to protect the public interest. The members of the subcommittee will propose revised or new Standards, Guidelines or Bulletins to the Professional Standards Committee as needed by the Committee's mandate.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as P.Eng. or P.L.(Engineering)
  • Specialized in one of the following disciplines:
    • Geological Engineers
    • Petroleum Engineers

Professional Standards Committee – Engineering Subcommittee Secretary

The purpose of this position is to support the Engineering Professional Standards Subcommittee (the subcommittee) in its meetings. 

The subcommittee's purpose is to ensure APEGA Professional Practice Standards, Guidelines and Bulletins related to the professional practice of engineering are adequate to protect the public interest; and to propose revised or new Standards, Guidelines or Bulletins to the Professional Standards Committee as needed by the Committee's mandate.

Qualifications

  • Be currently enrolled as an E.I.T. with APEGA
  • Familiarity with the engineering industry in Alberta
  • Work experience with an APEGA permit holder is considered an asset

The Environmental Professional Practice Subcommittee ensures APEGA professional practice standards, guidelines, and bulletins for the professional practice of environmental engineering and geoscience are adequate to protect the public interest. Wetlands Science and Engineering Working Group

The Environmental Professional Standards Subcommittee undertakes activities that enhance APEGA members' awareness of environmental issues of a professional nature. It also provides input on matters that affect the practice of engineering and geoscience professions in the environmental area.

The Wetlands Science and Engineering Working Group consists of geoscience and engineering APEGA members whose scope of practice is subject to the Provincial Wetlands Policy

  • Background and current practice in an environmentally-related aspect of geoscience or engineering

Maintaining APEGA's high standards for professionalism and expertise requires a high standard of membership. Help assess new member applications and qualifications or contribute to the regulation of the examinations used in the application process.

National Professional Practice Exam Question Author

Volunteers needed: Up to 10 

APEGA Members are invited to volunteer to help produce new, high quality examination questions to add to the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE) item bank to be used on future administrations of the NPPE.

Qualifications

  • Willingness and commitment to write exam questions regularly
  • Strong English language skills used to write high quality examination questions
  • Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist registered in Alberta or other Canadian association
  • 2+ years of work experience
  • Working knowledge of professionalism, law, and ethics as outlined in the NPPE scope and syllabus

Registration Committee - Subject Matter Expert

Volunteers needed: More than 60 

APEGA is looking for members to act as Subject Matter Experts (SME) on the Registration Committee. The primary duty of an SME is to review and provide recommendations on whether an applicant for professional registration has met the minimum requirements for registration.

  • hold a faculty position in Engineering or Geoscience at a university within Canada, or hold professor emeritus designation with the university.
  • have held non-practising status for no longer than five (5) years. 

Experience SMEs must:

  • have demonstrated expertise in an area of engineering or geosciences with at least ten years experience in the field of practice, and
  • be in good standing with APEGA and have a license to practice engineering or geoscience, or have held non-practising status for no longer than five (5) years.

Review, vet, and recommend nominees for APEGA's annual Council Election and for awards and honours bestowed by APEGA and external organizations.

Honours and Awards Committee

To advise and assist the Chief Executive Officer or designate in carrying out the Association's program to enhance professional pride and the stature of the engineering and geoscience professions. Committee members will achieve this task by recognizing the accomplishments of Members of the Association, non-members and projects which had input and/or direction from Members.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as a P.Eng., P.Geo., P.Geol., P.Geoph. or P.L. with APEGA
  • Practising Professional Members with at least 5 years of practice
