Why You Should Become a Mentor

Mentoring a less experienced person in your field allows you to give back to your profession. But there are other benefits to being a volunteer mentor for you, such as:

  • being a role model and guide
  • enhancing your skill in mentoring, which helps supervisors provide ongoing support and training
  • learning from your mentees (reverse mentoring)
  • attending training and recognition events
  • claiming up to 20 Continuing Professional Development hours for each year of active mentoring (Participation category)
  • potentially being nominated for an Outstanding Mentor Summit Award.

Who Can Be a Mentor

APEGA mentors are Professional Members who want share their expertise and wisdom with less experienced Members, including many internationally educated graduates.

Do the following statements describe you?

  • I am an active listener.
  • I am compassionate.
  • I am open and willing to share.
  • I am able to give constructive feedback.
  • I am patient.

If so, you could be an APEGA mentor!

What to Expect as a Mentor

When you sign up as a mentor, there is no registration fee.

After completing your registration, you must watch a series of orientation videos that will give you all of the information you will need to get the most out of the Mentoring Program.

Read about the orientation videos

Once you've watched the videos, you can search for a match based on a number of criteria like location, discipline, and or skills you want to share. If you are not happy with your mentoring match, you can close that relationship and look for a new one.

Each mentoring partnership lasts about one year. During this time, you would typically meet in-person with your mentee twice per month and touch base over email or phone communication on non-meeting weeks. If you and your mentee are far apart from each other, you could even meet virtually through distance mentoring, using technology such as Facetime, Skype, or any other method that both you and your mentee are comfortable using.

How to Become a Mentor

Becoming an APEGA mentor is easy.

  1. Complete your mentor application form online.
  2. Complete the online orientation videos.
  3. Log in to your account and search for potential mentees (based on your preferences).
  4. Request a mentee, and start mentoring!
