Please join the Peace Region Branch in welcoming Pat Carlson, P.Eng., who will present on his history and lessons learned as a lifelong entrepreneur and CEO.
Pat Carlson, P.Eng. is the founding Chief Executive Officer of Seven Generations, and an original director.
A creative engineer, instinctual entrepreneur and energy visionary with 40 years of professional success, Pat defines his business through his stakeholders' eyes. Pat insists that Seven Generations maps the path to successful teamwork, competitive leadership, financial performance, and social permission by earning its right to succeed from those it serves: customers, partners, suppliers, residents, employees, communities where it operates, society, and of course, financial backers.
Pat authored Seven Generations' operating creed – the Level 1 Corporate Policy Statement or Code of Conduct. It is the behavioural source code and a personal pledge for how people will run 7G.
Seven Generations is Pat's fourth start-up after previous success at North American Oil Sands Ltd., Krang Energy, and Passage Energy. For Pat, company building is characterized by a solitary year of research, formulating a view on capturing the next opportunity, examining how technology and energy price forecasts will impact the business, defining the required skills to create long-term enterprise value, and engaging expert partners with the highly prized technical and business acumen to successfully launch the enterprise.
Pat pushes known technologies to a higher degree of understanding and application, to levels that define leading performance and unlock historically imprisoned resource horizons at a lower cost. A remarkable engineering and energy innovator, Pat creates value and expands opportunity in the sweet spot of enterprise.
Beyond the office, Pat and his wife Connie walk this culture of teamwork, partnership, excellence and human compassion into their private philanthropy. Married in their teens, this generous Calgary couple has touched many lives – most evident in their donation of more than $4 million to Pat’s alma mater – the University of Calgary for the Schulich School of Engineering, and for the Strengths in ADHD Research Project at the University of Calgary, plus numerous other organizations that are led by passionate people pursuing charitable endeavors.
Pat earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary in 1975, is a professional engineer, an active member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta and in 2008 acquired the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors. Pat’s contributions have been recognized with a Canadian Engineering Leader Award (2013) from the Schulich School of Engineering, and in October 2015, Pat was awarded the Prairies EY Entrepreneur of the Year for Oil and Gas.
