With the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), there are questions on how AI impacts our society and way of life. In this lunch and learn, we will hear about AI and its applications, AI development as a type of engineering design, and some ethical and societal issues.
About the Presenters
Eric Chalmers, P.Eng., PhD, completed an electrical engineering co-op program at the University of Alberta in 2011. He completed a PhD in the U of A's electrical and computer engineering department in 2015, and received the George B. Walker award for best doctoral thesis. Eric then worked as a post-doctoral fellow in the neuroscience department at the University of Lethbridge, where he developed brain-inspired machine-learning algorithms. He accepted a position at Farmers Edge—first as a senior data scientist, then as lead data scientist—developing intelligent prediction models and decision-support systems for precision agriculture. Eric is currently the Director of Data Science at SurexDirect, an online Canadian insurance brokerage that ranked 22nd on Canadian Business and Maclean’s 2018 Growth 500 list.
