Webinar | Applying Geoscience Skills in Canada's "New" Resource Industries

28 Sep 2022
Register by September 26, 2022

Professional geoscientists have built comprehensive skill sets for petroleum exploration and development. As the industry evolves to need fewer professional staff, you can apply your skills to develop other subsurface resources—not only extracted resources like helium and lithium in oilfield brines, but in characterizing aquifers for geothermal energy, carbon sequestration, and wastewater disposal. Join this session to appreciate the scope of opportunities that exist to apply the knowledge and skills you’ve spent your career building.

Learning objectives:

  • Variety and importance of resources that exist below the surface in sedimentary basins
  • Types and scope of subsurface data available in sedimentary basins in Canada and internationally
  • Key geoscience skills required to apply these datasets in pursuit of non-petroleum resources
  • A realistic perspective on the resources that are available, and our limitations in exploiting them

This session will be held through ON24.

About the Presenter

Brad Hayes is the president of Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd., a geoscience consulting firm addressing technical and strategic issues around oil and gas development, water resource management, helium exploration, geothermal energy, and carbon sequestration. He joined PRCL in 1996 after 15 years of exploration experience in operating oil and gas companies including Shell Canada and Canadian Hunter Exploration.  He is currently co-chair of the Board of Directors of Imperial Helium Corp., a publicly-listed helium exploration company.

Dr. Hayes earned a PhD in geology from the University of Alberta after completing a B.Sc. in geology at the University of Toronto. He is the outreach director for the Canadian Society for Unconventional Resources (CSUR), and a past-president of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG). He completed two three-year terms as Councillor for APEGA in 2013-2019 and is also registered as a P.Geo with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).  He is a member of the Research Advisory Committee for the Canadian Energy Research Institute and a member of the Energy Technical Advisory Committee for Geoscience BC. Dr. Hayes is an adjunct professor in the University of Alberta department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and a sessional lecturer in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Mount Royal University. He has published and presented extensively on a variety of technical geoscience subjects in industry and regulatory conferences and media.
