Calgary Branch PD Evening - Data Science and its Applications in Oil and Gas

5:30 pm - 8:45 pm

Register by May 28, 2018

Data driven decision making has gained a lot of attention in the past decade. In an age where digital data has become the standard, the oil and gas industry is desperately seeking ways to fully use its potential. Data science is an interdisciplinary field that combines advanced computing techniques with statistics and domain knowledge to gather insights and thus make informed decisions from data. This presentation will focus on giving an introduction to data science and aim to demystify the various buzzwords associated with it. We will describe some of the pilot projects undertaken by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) in an effort to analyze subsurface data with advanced data mining techniques. These include: Facies modeling, water saturation estimation, building geological analogues and relating them to oil production. These projects have been carried out in different oil and gas plays including the Athabasca oil sands and the Montney formation.

About the Presenters

Gagan KapoorGagan Kapoor is working as a Data Scientist with the Intelligence and Modeling Team at the Alberta Energy Regulator. He graduated in 2017 with an honours degree in Geology from Saint Mary's University, Halifax. He has worked with Husky and Nexen in Calgary, TU Freiberg in Germany and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in India. His thesis combined computer science and geology, focusing on coupling machine learning with geological workflows. He has keen interests in geological modeling and geostatistics and in particular applying techniques in Data Science to solve geoscientific problems in oil and gas.

Chris ChenChris Chen is a Data Scientist at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) where he is committed to innovating the future of Alberta's energy landscape with AI-based technologies. Prior to the AER, he has been working in the Telecommunication industry for 16 years. His previous works done at Shaw Communications have helped the organization significantly reduced customer churns and boosted product sales. In his spare time, Chris loves competing on data science challenges and holds the title of "Competition Master" in the popular Kaggle.com data science platform by winning a number of competitions participated by thousands of statisticians and data scientists.
