Calgary Branch PD Evening: Do You Really Know Where Your Data (and Wells) are Located?
5:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Register by February 3, 2019
This presentation will focus on the issues faced by the oil and gas industry as they pertain to the positional accuracy of seismic surveys and the selection of wellsite locations. There are a great many factors that influence the accuracy of positioning, including survey errors, dominion land survey (DLS) grids, and datum errors (NAD27/NAD83).
The presentation will address in the following topics:
DLS Grids (The Township System)
- A history of the township system
- The evolution of the digital grids of Western Canada
- Understanding the errors and risks involved
- A history of datums and ellipsoids
- The NAD27 and NAD83 datums of Canada
- The magnitude of risk in industry
- Where is my well really located?
- Mitigating the risk
- Bart’s theory of survey relativity
The presentation will be delivered in a clear manner that does not require an in-depth understanding of surveying, but instead reflects a desire to eliminate the risk associated with these issues.
About the Presenter
After completing his studies in Business Administration at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Bart Iverson headed west seeking the adventure of the oil patch. In 1980, Bart found himself in a camp at Kotcho Lake east of Fort Nelson, B.C., and worked for the next 5 years for Horkoff Surveys, which was based in Calgary, Alberta. During that time, he also attended SAIT and studied seismic surveying from the industry’s best. In the fall of 1985, Bart co-founded Mountaindale Surveys, and he continued his field work for the next 4 years. As family responsibilities took hold, Bart joined Canex Exploration in December 1989 and continued working as a survey supervisor until late 1994, when he co-founded Excalibur Technology. In 1995, Excalibur merged with Gemini to become the Excalibur-Gemini Group, and Bart took up the mantle of VP Operations. In 2003, Excalibur-Gemini was acquired by Divestco Inc., and Bart continued working at Divestco in the role of Director of Geomatics. During his 39-year career, Bart has presented at many industry events, including the CSEG, CSPG, AAPG, CGEF, PPDM, Doodletrain, and Technology Days in Colombia. Beyond these Industry-sponsored events, Bart has also presented over 50 private sessions at oil and gas corporate offices.
