Advanced Ethical Decision Making

APEGA professionals occupy a very important position in relation to public trust. There is an assumption of integrity and the application of the highest ethical principles and standards in the protection of both the public and the profession itself. This is not a simple or easy task. It requires sensitivity to ethical issues and the ability to use ethical judgment. It also requires the motivation to do the right thing. Most difficult of all is the commitment to take action that requires courage, persistence, overcoming obstacles, influencing skills and personal confidence. In "Advanced Ethical Decision-making" you will consider each one of these four requirements and apply your thinking to real dilemmas that professionals like you face.

When you participate in this session, you will:

  • Identify ethical dilemmas facing APEGA professionals and discuss the personal and organizational obstacles associated with taking ethical action.
  • Review the four-step model of ethical action developed by James Rest and the challenges inherent in each step:
    • Moral Sensitivity
    • Moral Judgment
    • Moral Motivation
    • Moral Character (action)
  • Apply a comprehensive model for ethical decision- making to ethical dilemmas that include action planning and influence.
  • Develop a plan to address both personal and organizational challenges associated with ethical decision-making and action-taking.

About the Presenter

Esther Hudson, BA, B.Ed., MAdEd, CPHREsther's consulting work focuses on helping organizations build the capability and commitment of their people to achieve breakthrough results. She is experienced in designing and delivering learning based systems and interventions that create change in skills and attitudes. Leadership development, thinking training, customer service, change management and culture assessment are particular specialties. She has designed and delivered training in over 50 different content areas. Taking a systems approach to managing personal and organizational change is central to all that she does.

Esther's experience includes over 30 years of consulting, specializing in human resource development working with clients in a wide range of companies including oil and gas, three levels of government; professional firms; construction and transportation companies; electric utilities; high tech companies and non-profit agencies.

Esther has worked with groups as large as 350 and as small as one. She is an accomplished conference speaker as well as a talented learning facilitator. Her sessions encourage people to think more deeply about what they are doing and to have the confidence to take constructive action and create change. Esther received Bachelors of Arts and Education degrees from Queen's University in Kingston Ontario. She also holds a Master of Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University and is a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR).
