Competency Self-Assessment Worksheet

APEGA's Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) system is expected to go live on May 2, 2018. This will affect all applications for Professional Engineer or Licensee designations that are initiated after the CBA launch. For more information, email

APEGA will soon introduce competency-based assessments (CBA) for engineering applicants wishing to become Professional Engineers or Licensees. Until CBA is in place, all applicants will continue using the Work Experience Record (WER).

After CBA is in place, engineering applicants applying for a P.Eng. or a Licensee licence, regardless of where they gained their experience or received their undergraduate education, will use the CBA process. All other engineering applicants and all geoscience applicants will continue using the existing WER.

To help with this change, engineering applicants applying for a P.Eng. or Licensee licence can use a competency self-assessment worksheet (CSAW) to compare their competencies with APEGA's minimum requirements. This will help them determine whether they should continue their application or wait until CBA is implemented.

Completing the CSAW

You can only use the CSAW once per membership application. Review the user guide before starting the worksheet.

The CSAW is a free worksheet. Completing it is optional. However, it is highly recommended so you can compare your work experience competencies with those required by APEGA. To complete the CSAW, you must have already started the application process and received an APEGA ID number.

You will see the CSAW option in your Member Self-Service Centre (MSSC) account. The worksheet lists 22 competencies that Professional Engineers and Licensees must have to meet APEGA's licensure requirements. To get the best results, we encourage you to be candid and include all of your work experience.

A printable summary of the results will appear in your MSSC account after you have submitted it. The results will provide an average for each competency category with a comparison to APEGA's minimum requirements.

This is only a self-assessment. The results will not be used on any official APEGA form or application, nor will they affect your application. APEGA staff cannot view or access the form or results and will not review, advise, mentor, or comment on the results. Your CSAW scores may differ from the official APEGA competency assessment.
