Work Experience Requirements for Membership

The Board of Examiners (BOE) makes final application decisions. It strongly emphasizes skills and competencies such as:

  • your ability to apply engineering or geoscience principles
  • your demonstrated technical proficiency

The BOE will consider increased technical competency and increasing levels of responsibility when evaluating your experience. State and explain your personal contributions for each example provided in your experience. The BOE has no previous knowledge of your work history and decides whether your application succeeds only on the evidence you provide – so be as explicit as possible.

APEGA will not accept your application for Professional Member or Licensee if you have less than 4 years of engineering or geoscience experience. If you have less than 4 years of experience, you must apply to be a Member-in-Training.

APEGA adheres to the Personal Information Protection Act in the collection, disclosure, and use of personal information. It is the applicant's responsibility to personally complete all components of the application. APEGA does not accept third-party submissions and will only answer questions about an application from the actual applicant.

Engineering Work Experience

APEGA uses competency-based assessment (CBA) for Professional Engineer applications. CBA enables you to demonstrate how you qualify for registration, by having you use specific examples from your work history to prove that you meet 22 key competencies.

CBA is currently only available for Professional Engineer applications. Engineer Licensee applications must submit a Work Experience Record.
