Position Summary

The Professional Practice portfolio provides input and assurance to APEGA’s CEO and Registrar, as well as Council, that APEGA's licensed professionals and permit holders understand and meet the professional expectations as set out in the Engineering and Geoscience Professions (EGP) Act, the General Regulation, and APEGA’s Practice Standards and Guidelines.

APEGA’s Professional Practice Advisors assure that a high quality of ethical and professional practice is maintained across the professions through administration of the following core functions:

  • Practice Standards and Guidelines development and refinement
  • Individual and permit holder practice reviews
  • Licensure Administration for changes in practice status applications

The CPD Practice Advisor is part of a growing team that reports to the CPD Manager as part of the Professional Practice team. The CPD Practice Advisor assures that a high quality of ethical and professional practice is maintained across the professions through support to the CPD Manager for the following functions:

  • Verifying licensed professional compliance with the CPD Program
  • Licensure administration of individual changes in practice status
  • Delivering regulatory professional development to APEGA licensed professionals, permit holders, and stakeholders


  • Responsible and accountable to the CPD Manager for:
    • Fulfilling the administration and operational demands of assigned individual Practice Reviews and CPD audits
    • Exercising the control, management, and execution of assigned individual licensure administration cases, including reinstatements, resumptions, non-practicing declarations, and special consideration requests
    • Providing excellent customer service and timely responses as a "subject matter expert" to inquiries from staff, permit holders, professional members, and members of the public related to individual practice reviews and CPD reporting
    • Facilitating and reporting on specific CPD reviews and audits regarding both individual members and permit holders
    • Provide support to the CPD Manager as required
  • Support the Professional Practice team and APEGA by:
    • Ensuring APEGA is a source of advice and information regarding the professional and ethical aspects of the practice of the engineering and geoscience professions
    • Applying knowledge of the Engineering and Geoscience Professions (EGP) Act, General Regulations, Bylaws, Standards, Guidelines and Bulletins, and other relevant acts, regulations and codes when responding to stakeholders
    • Maintaining a professional and constructive attitude in dealing with members, volunteers, the public, and APEGA employees
    • Assisting in the development and implementation of policy, process, and procedures required to conduct individual professional practice reviews and CPD reviews and audits
    • Participating constructively and effectively in a team environment and with continuous improvement efforts
    • Working with the entire Professional Practice team to lead and facilitate process improvements within APEGA
    • Work closely and coordinate with relevant departments within APEGA
    • Represent APEGA at stakeholder and APEGA functions, as needed
  • As tasked, provide support to the Practice Review Board (PRB), the Practice Standards Committee (PSC), and subcommittees by:
    • Participating in the development and maintenance of professional practice standards, guidelines, and bulletins for the professions
    • Conducting research to support the goals and objectives of the PRB, PSC, and subcommittees
    • Assisting with the development and reporting of key process indicators
    • Preparing and managing reinstatement and resumption files for PRB recommendations and decisions as per department policy, process, and procedures

Skills & Attributes

  • Ability to apply sound judgment for appropriate escalation of matters to the CPD Manager and Director, Professional Practice


  • Professional engineer, geoscientist, or eligible for professional membership in APEGA with 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in the broad area of the engineering and/or geoscience fields
  • Prior experience in a regulated industry, working as a regulator or in a government agency would be considered an asset
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of regulatory processes and legislation is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with learning management systems is an asset
