Volunteer as an Appeal Board Member

The Appeal Board provides APEGA members and the public full protection of their statutory right of appeal and right to natural justice, in accordance with the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act, through review of decisions and actions by the Discipline Committee, Practice Review Board, Investigative Committee, or Board of Examiners. The Appeal Board is established under section 18.1 of the EGP Act.

As part of APEGA's criteria for selection for this volunteer position, volunteers must undergo a credit and criminal background check, performed by Sterling BackCheck on behalf of APEGA.

Volunteer Position Description

Reporting Structure

The Appeal Board operates as a critical piece of APEGA's overall regulatory framework under the administrative responsibility of the Registrar.


  • Serve a three-year term minimum with potential for reappointment
  • Participate actively in review, understanding, and revision of Appeal Board policy
  • Participate actively in Appeal Board (non-hearing) meetings, as required
  • Participate in appeal panels, as required
  • Ensure all relevant evidence that is part of the appeal is reviewed and appellants are given reasonable opportunity to demonstrate and explain the reason for their appeals
  • Reach conclusions that are objective and complete, in consultation with all appeal panel members
  • Participate on the APEGA/ASET Joint Appeal Board; duties are similar to those noted above but restricted to Professional Technologist appeals

Skills and Qualifications

  • Active Professional Member licensed as a P.Eng., P.Geo., P.Geol., P.Geoph., or P.L. with APEGA for a minimum of 5 years
  • Professional Members, if mid-career, can be of non-practicing status; Life Members will be considered if it has been less than five years since becoming a Life Member
  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience in Canada

Term of Office

Three years (renewable)

Average Time Commitment

  • 1-2 Appeal Board meeting per year – full day meetings
  • Approximately 4-5 appeal hearings or written submission appeals per year
    • Half day of preparation
    • Half to full day for the hearing
    • Some time may be required post-hearing to review decisions
  • Appeals will be booked in advance

Measures of Success

The successful Appeal Board volunteer will:

  • Successfully apply broad knowledge of professional ethics and expectations in analyzing complaints made against APEGA members and permit holders
  • Regularly attend Appeal Board meetings
  • Regularly participate in Appeal Board hearings
  • Make accurate, fair, efficient, and defensible appeal panel decisions


This is a volunteer position and has no monetary benefits. Volunteers will be reimbursed for expenses incurred as part of this volunteer position, subject to the approved APEGA Travel and Expense Claim policy. Volunteers will also be part of the APEGA Volunteer Management System, and as such, accrue volunteer service credits. Volunteer participation may also be claimed as part of APEGA's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) participation annual requirements for active and participating license holders.

All hearings before the Appeal Board will be open to the public unless the Board orders otherwise.
