Engineers Canada Needs Expert Help On Adapting Infrastructure

Engineers Canada’s Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee has drafted a step-by-step process to assess the impact of climate change on infrastructure.  The committee is supported by infrastructure expert working groups made up of engineers and other technical experts with design and operations experience in particular categories, as well as climate scientists and experts in other areas.

Engineers Canada is currently looking for volunteers for its four working groups — buildings; roads and associated structures; stormwater and wastewater treatment and collection systems; water resource systems and other water management infrastructures.

This committee’s protocol is intended to assist owners and operators when designing, developing, operating and managing their existing and future infrastructure. A national steering committee set up by Engineers Canada in 2005, the group consists of senior representatives from federal, provincial and municipal levels of government in Canada, along with several non-government organizations.
It oversees the National Engineering Vulnerability Assessment project, which is a long-term initiative of the Canadian engineering profession assessing the vulnerability of public infrastructures to the impacts of future changes in climate. “This information is a vital input to proposed adjustments and amendments to infrastructure codes, standards and related engineering practices,” says a release to The PEGG.

For further detailed information on the protocol, to volunteer for an expert working group, or to provide selections of case studies, please contact
