Academic Requirements for Engineers & Geoscientists

Applicants are required to provide their academics to be assessed for academic qualification. There are different academic requirements for Professional Engineers and Professional Geoscientists.

Basic guidelines regarding acceptability of certain academic programs can be found:

All applicants will be evaluated against the APEGA syllabus in engineering or geoscience. Applicants who do not meet the academic requirements could be prescribed exams to make up for identified academic deficiencies, asked to write confirmatory exams to confirm the quality, depth, and breadth of their education, or refused. If there is a significant academic deficiency the submitted work experience may not be reviewed.

Applicants with an undergraduate degree not in engineering or geoscience should apply as a member-in-training to avoid unnecessarily completing the work experience requirement.

Engineers-in-Training

Applicants that are currently Active Engineers-in-Training (E.I.T.) with APEGA do not need to provide their academics again unless they are claiming Post-Graduate Work Experience Record and their transcripts were not previously submitted.

If an applicant's E.I.T. status has expired or the applicant is not in good standing prior to having started their application for Licensee or Professional Membership, they will be required to submit their academic documentation again for assessment based on the education they have.

Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board

For degree programs accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), APEGA will accept an official transcript from the degree granting institution. The degree that is provided must be conferred.

For a Licensee or Professional Membership application, if an applicant is claiming Post-Graduate Work Experience Credit, they will need to have their Post-Graduate transcripts sent to APEGA.

  • Undergraduate Degrees
  • Postgraduate Degrees (if applicable)

World Education Services (WES) For International Applicants

All applicants with international education are required to provide World Education Services (WES) ICAP Course by Course Report. WES is an international credential evaluation service designed by Immigration and Citizenship Canada to provide educational credential evaluations for education completed outside of Canada. All transcripts must be included as part of the WES ICAP Course by Course Report, including transfer courses. APEGA does not accept industry training (i.e., journeyman) certificates, professional development, or continuing education.

A WES evaluation that states you have a "4-year degree undergraduate degree" is only the first step in the academic qualification process. APEGA's Board of Examiners must also conduct a full review of your academic credentials.

WES ICAP Course by Course Report vs. APEGA's Board of Examiners

WES ICAP Course by Course Report

  • Verifies the authenticity of the applicants' academic documents
  • Completes any translations required of your academics
  • Establishes the equivalent level of your academic credentials with the Canadian university system.

APEGA's Board of Examiners

  • Reviews the applicants' education to ensure it is in engineering or geoscience
  • Confirms the acceptability of the course content of the applicant education
  • Ensures that the applicants' education meets the legal requirements for licensure

How to Obtain a World Education Services Report

To obtain a WES ICAP Course by Course Report:

  1. Start an application through myAPEGA and receive an APEGA ID number. This APEGA ID number will be required to order a WES ICAP Course by Course Report.
  2. In the Online Application System, when completing the 12 steps of the application, after the education has been added in Step 5, follow the instructions to continue to the WES website for the next step of the application process.
  3. Following the instructions provided by WES. If an applicant already has an evaluation report from WES, they may need to update that report to an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) Course by Course Report.
  4. WES will send the completed evaluation report to APEGA electronically. Physical copies will not be accepted.

Applicants are required to monitor the status of their report though the WES Portal and notify APEGA at [email protected] of any delays in receiving the report. Applicants have ninety (90) days from the date they submit and pay for their application to provide at least one of their academic documents to APEGA.

The final review of academic documents is completed by APEGA's Board of Examiners. The Board of Examiners ultimately determines an applicants' depth, breadth, and acceptability of academics.
