Have you proven yourself as a highly competent technologist? Are you ready to take full responsibility, under law, for your work?
The Professional Licensee category of licensure could be for you. The Professional Licensee is a professional license allowing you to practice engineering or geoscience within a clearly defined scope of practice. Professional Licensees are permitted to independently practice engineering and/or geoscience in Alberta within narrow, defined scopes of practice and to take responsibility for that work. This category of licensure recognizes that certain qualified individuals can be permitted to independently carry out certain specific functions normally within the definition of professional engineering or professional geoscience without the supervision of a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist.
What criteria do I have to meet?
To become licensed as a Professional Licensee you must:
1. Have at least 2 years of post-secondary education acceptable to the APEGA Board of Examiners in areas that relate to the practice of engineering and/or geoscience;
2. Have at least 6 years of experience in work of an engineering and/or geoscience nature that is acceptable to the APEGA Board of Examiners, at least two of which are in the defined scope of practice and which were completed under the supervision and control of a Professional Member, and at least one year of your experience must be equivalent Canadian experience;
3. Be of good character and reputation;
4. Demonstrate knowledge of law, ethics and professionalism by passing the National Professional Practice Examination;
5. Meet the English Language Competency requirement.
How do I apply for my license?
To apply for your license you must submit a completed Professional Licensee Application for Registration Form together with the required accompanying documents and application fee to APEGA.
The Application for Registration Form and related explanatory materials are available online at the bottom of this page. In the alternative, a paper version of the application package may be obtained through the Calgary or Edmonton APEGA offices.
